Lady Fitzroy Memorial

leaf.jpgClose to the George Street entrance to the Park there is a white obelisk which was erected to mark the location of the oak tree against which Lady Fitzroy was thrown on 7 December 1847 and fatally injured. With Governor Fitzroy driving the carriage, a party set out to attend a wedding at St James' Church, Sydney. Soon after leaving Old Government House, the horses bolted causing the carriage to strike the tree and overturn. The Governor's wife, Lady Fitzroy, and his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Charles Masters, were killed in the accident. Governor Fitzroy escaped without injury.
