Old Government House

govh1.jpgOld Government House is the oldest remaining public building in Australia. Every Governor from Phillip to Fitzroy spent some time in residence at Parramatta.

The existing building is located on the site of the original small house built in 1790 for Governor Phillip. A large and elegant residence constructed in 1799 by Governor Hunter replaced this small house.

This structure was enlarged and improved in 1815 and 1816 by Governor Macquarie to its present form. It was used as a Vice-Regal residence until 1855.

After 1855, the house was used for various purposes, including a boarding house and for the King's School junior boarders, until an Act of Parliament placed it under the control of the National Trust of Australia (NSW) in March 1967.govh2.jpg

In 1995, the building was restored by the National Trust as a Vice-Regal residence.

The building was officially re-opened by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in 1970.

Old Government House is open for guided tours and functions. For more information, please phone the House on
